After a repeat in February this year, we have a summer version of the festival again. And this summer, well, we ignored the \"holidays\" and \"beaches\" and other such trappings, and instead locked ourselves inside and played demos for the games that made an impression on us as part of the revamped and updated Steam Next Fest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/941460\/Death_Trash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DEATH TRASH<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/deathtrash.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/deathtrash-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Death Trash Meat Machine\" class=\"wp-image-530429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/deathtrash-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/deathtrash-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/deathtrash-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/deathtrash-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/deathtrash-390x220.jpg 390w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/deathtrash.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Costas Kallianiotis: We knew about the Cyberpunk aesthetic as well as its Steampunk counterpart, we got to know about Whalepunk along the way... Maybe it's time to learn about... Meatpunk. Because, seemingly at least, that seems to be exactly the prevailing aesthetic in Death Trash. In this fairly old-school isometric RPG, masses of meat have started popping up for some reason directly from the earth, providing cheap food for the groups of outcasts and exiles who have formed small communities outside the \"centers of civilization\" guarded by powerful droids. One such exile is the protagonist of the story whom we control in the game's 1-1\/2 hour demo. In the Demo we experience the beginning of the adventure, familiarize ourselves with the handling and gameplay systems, and explore a small area of the (quite extensive, in the final version) World Map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">In general, Death Trash gives off strong post-apocalyptic vibes inspired by the early Fallout games, combined with a fairly old-fashioned fighting style reminiscent of 2017's Ruiner. There are also hints of distinct options in some quests, but predictably any long-term implications of these can't be made clear in the short demo. Quite \"basic\" also seems to be the writing section of the game, but this may be further clarified in the full release. Overall impressions of the small team's (4 people!) creation are highly positive, however, and for the most part justify the expectations the game has built up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Death Trash is released in Early Access on August 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Pavlos Geranios: Without dizzying too much with extensive texts and smug tutorials Death Trash adopts an in-your-face attitude, characteristic of the Meatpunk genre. The handling is smooth and the approach to combat is methodically slow (don't expect a Children of Morta here). As unforgiving as its world, it requires study and surgical moves from the player as death lurks around every corner. The RPG elements it incorporates make it as complex as it needs to be. Broadly speaking, we control a... cosmic force (one might even call us God), which is called upon to steer the civilizations of the galaxy towards their destiny - whether that be prosperity or destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During each game we collect a \"resource\", which we spend as random events concerning the civilizations of the galaxy occur. Depending on our decisions in these events, each civilization's 5 stats (corresponding to scientific knowledge, population growth, energy self-sufficiency, mortality and \"democracy\") fluctuate, leading in turn to other random events depending on the percentages (for example, if energy self-sufficiency goes to zero then a random event \"Resource Wars\" occurs). Usually the \"beneficial\" choices among the 3 available require spending resources, while in contrast the destructive ones offer a high percentage of resources. Therefore, it becomes a bit of a strategy issue whether to sacrifice civilizations to gain resources that will lead to prosperity for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">In the short Demo we are set in a galaxy where only 2 civilizations coexist, while in the process a third one emerges after the evolutionary progression of organisms on another planet. Apart from managing their statistics, the main events taking place concern the field of space exploration, whether the civilizations will ever meet, and whether this meeting will be peaceful or extremely hostile. Interesting and well-written game in general, despite its obvious low-budget nature, and with particularly well-done aesthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Fermi Paradox is expected to be released in Early Access sometime next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1430750\/Blacksmith_Legends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BLACKSMITH LEGENDS<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/blacksmith-legends.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/blacksmith-legends-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Blacksmith Legends quest\" class=\"wp-image-530440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/blacksmith-legends-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/blacksmith-legends-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/blacksmith-legends-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/blacksmith-legends-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/blacksmith-legends-390x220.jpg 390w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/blacksmith-legends.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">KC: Blacksmith Legends is a bit reminiscent of Crossroads Inn in terms of concept and, as you can imagine, it's a... Blacksmith Simulator. We control a Blacksmith who opens a blacksmith shop in a town, and is required to learn and keep recipes, complete quests and orders to increase his reputation and clientele, sell his products on the market, collect the necessary resources for his recipes, and pay the taxes to the Mayor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The whole concept is enhanced by extra gameplay parameters such as the ability to influence the development of our city with our recipes, and the ability to recruit Heroes who explore the world, clear dungeons, and offer us common or rare resources. Several of the features of the full game, such as access to the global market or the ability to open extra shops in other cities, are expectedly locked in the demo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It's a bit of a bummer that the game is created by non-native English speakers, as there are quite a few spelling mistakes in his writing and some slightly out-of-date and anachronistic idioms. Other than that, the concept is fairly simplistic but fun for someone looking for a medieval-low fantasy sim experience that strays from the norm, without the final product in its current state being dramatically impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Either way, the release date for Blacksmith Legends is still in the vague \"Coming Soon\/TBA\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1466640\/Road_96\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ROAD 96<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/road96-1024x576.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/road96-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Road 96 Scenery\" class=\"wp-image-530467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/road96-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/road96-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/road96-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/road96-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/road96-390x220.jpg 390w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/road96.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">KC: Road 96 is being launched as a \"procedurally generated road trip\", inspired by the films of Tarantino and the Cohen brothers, by developers who worked on games like Valiant Hearts and Memories Retold. And, gameplay-wise, it's just that: in each playthrough we control a different character during a road trip to the country's borders, and play through a different sequence of scenes, with each road trip potentially being completely different from the others. This \"differentness\" is reportedly influenced by our interactions with the environment, our interactions with the characters we encounter, and the given factor of randomness in the selection of subsequent scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the demo we have access to only 4 of the scenes that will be in the final product. However, even this \"free sample\" makes the creators' intentions more than clear, and the result can only be described as seductive. It is also worth noting that, although the game is set in a \"fictional\" 1996 and in an equally fictional country, the scenario is quite political and connections can easily be made to our reality (authoritarian government, highly polarized upcoming election, division of the people, police violence, corruption, terrorism, refugees, etc.). My only objection to the game, which will probably need access to the final product to be fully clarified, concerns the possibility that it... TellTales more than allowed and that the developments in each scene are more linear than one would assume. That is, despite the apparent freedom of movement, the outcome of each individual scene is one and predetermined, regardless of our character's attributes and decisions during that scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Road 96 is expected to be released sometime this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/900400\/Sacred_Fire_A_Role_Playing_Game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SACRED FIRE<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sacredfire-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sacredfire-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Sacred Fire Choices\" class=\"wp-image-530448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sacredfire-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sacredfire-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sacredfire-1-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sacredfire-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sacredfire-1-390x220.jpg 390w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sacredfire-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">KC: Sacred Fire was highlighted to us by press releases back in MAKRINO 2017, the year in which it completed a successful Kickstarter Campaign. However, we had to wait until this year to finally see a sample of its gameplay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game is subtitled a \"Psychological RPG\", and this odd description seems to be borne out by the gameplay elements themselves. Controlling a Pictish warrior (or warrioress - the scenario changes more or less depending on the gender of the protagonist) during the years of Roman presence in Britain and Hadrian's Wall, the action in the game is largely promoted as a typical \"Choose Your Own Adventure\" adventure. The telling difference is indeed the \"psychological\" factor: the player's actions and choices, combined with the environmental conditions at the time, and the given factor of luck via dice rolls, influence various \"psychological\" stats such as Fear, Anger, Self-Control, etc., and these stats play a crucial role in the choices offered during the playthrough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The end result is very tempting, and the prospects of the game are excellent for fans of choice-based\/story-driven games and historical RPGs. Of course, as with Road 96, it remains to be seen whether the choices offered in the final game will actually play a heavy role or if they will affect purely secondary elements and the experience will be hopelessly linear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sacred Fire will be released sometime in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1527950\/Wartales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WARTALES<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/wartales.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/wartales-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Wartales Map\" class=\"wp-image-530447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/wartales-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/wartales-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/wartales-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/wartales-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/wartales-390x220.jpg 390w, https:\/\/ragequit.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/wartales.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">PG: While scanning the strategy titles at this year's Steam Next Fest out of curiosity, the above title came up in my recommendations. Already from its description it was foreshadowed that we were dealing with a revamped Battle Brothers 3D aesthetic. And Wartales is exactly that! Already from the technical tome, which still needs optimization, the demo manages to convey all the gritty atmosphere that the title exudes. Right from the start, at the beginning of the map navigation one feels like living in an inhospitable medieval landscape where the slightest mistake can be fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the technical aspect - simple music, photorealistic rendering of the mundane - Wartales stands out for its relatively simple systems and turn-based combat. Each member of your adventuring party has a different role which is further specialised in level 3 by selecting one of the three classes which brings about its own skillset. Moving the game to a 3D map brings about some extra features such as having viewcones of enemies, meaning we can ambush them giving them advantages in battle. Some additional details (e.g. the campsite, the assignment of professions - blacksmith, herbalist etc. - to the members of the troupe) add the necessary depth and promise to claim many of your hours! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wartales is already in Early Access with all systems locked. Release is expected in 2021 after they enrich the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">KC: Combining the spirit of Battle Brothers with the open-world nature of Mount and Blade, with the ability to turn our mercenary band of mercenaries towards the path of illegality if we want (with the corresponding gameplay implications). Wartales came seemingly out of nowhere, but became wishlisted with lightning speed after briefly engaging with its demo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1017160\/Gearshifters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GEARSHIFTERS<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com\/steam\/apps\/1017160\/ss_5a7331d4c8ef60d1f604b7d8d850692bdd0f011f.jpg?t=1624015743\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com\/steam\/apps\/1017160\/ss_5a7331d4c8ef60d1f604b7d8d850692bdd0f011f.jpg?t=1624015743\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Alexandros Gekas: I have a fondness for top-down vehicular combat games from the days when I was an amusing little kid (let's say now) playing Remedy's Death Rally. Gearshifters is a roguelite combat racer where the player has to complete tracks with various standard objectives unscathed, destroying enemies that have set their sights on him and trying to defeat the boss hiding at the end of the track. In between missions there is the possibility of upgrading and customizing the vehicle so your chances of successfully completing the route increase progressively even if it takes a few tries to do so. The technical area is beautiful and the handling is precise and enjoyable, while the available route in the demo (with three stages and a boss) is of the perfect length to encourage another attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall I got very positive impressions from Gearshifters and I'm optimistic that it will offer us something different but of high quality in the saturated genre of roguelites. After the vaccine and after the nanochip transferred thoughts in the form of cookies to the Internet, Steam listened to me and dropped GRIME on the main page. Its visual field more surreal and less \"fairy tale beautiful\" can be described. However the game is love from the first minute. Hard metroidvania, in the philosophy of Dark Souls more than Blasphemous: methodical battles, levelling system that takes into account scaling with weapons, hidden secrets diffused in the levels. GRIME invites you to plunge into the photorealistic depths of its world and squeeze every stone for its juice. And it promises you that it will bring out your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game's demo lasts about 1.5 hours, long enough to explore the map inch by inch, take out the first boss and get you intrigued enough to press F6 for the \"Wishlist\". Releasing in 2021 and probably a serious contender for metroidvania of the year, since Silksong seems a long way off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Panagiotis Mitrakis: While I can't say I share Paul's enthusiasm, GRIME seems to have some depth to its mechanics and a wacky sci-fi setting enough to keep me in my seat. Yes, Satan himself. The disgusting humans with their demon hunters managed to send you back to hell ten years ago, but now it's time for the big comeback and revenge. So recruit some of the most famous monsters of history and fantasy like Count Dracula, the Headless Horseman and Bloody Mary and set out to teach the humans a good lesson about who's really the boss. The map progresses from event to event in the manner seen in other popular roguelites such as FTL and Slay the Spire but with more free movement on the map and combat, when you need to engage in it, is conducted in rounds with a total number of action points to spend as you see fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One great originality of Rogue Lords is that, like the devil you are, you can... steal! If you have a diabolical essence (which acts as both a mana and health bar) available and you see that the battle is not going favorably, there is always the possibility to activate the devil mode and directly interfere with the rules of the game, refilling your units' health bars, annihilating those of your opponents, stealing skills and status effects and other similar... devilish things! The interesting gameplay combined with the aesthetics that are clearly influenced by Tim Burton won me over and I think it's worth keeping the game in mind if you're a fan of the genre. Then you owe it to yourself to check out Unmetal, a stealth-action game that serves as an ode to 80s action movies while adding a generous dose of self-deprecating humor. Our hero, a tough guy who spits bullets and pisses whiskey named Stephen Jesse Fox is arrested by mercenaries for a crime he didn't commit and recounts how he managed to escape, acting as the game's narrator himself. The developers take full advantage of this narrative mode by changing many of the map elements before your eyes as our friend Jesse is a completely unreliable narrator!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game's graphics are beautiful and clearly evoke the era they pay homage to, however the truth is that on full screen they are probably lower resolution than I would personally like. Other than that though, Unmetal has plenty of charm, it's usually genuinely humorous rather than cold, and the gameplay judged on its own without the satirical elements can easily hold the player's interest. Dread Templar is one of them. From the first few minutes of engagement, it's obvious that it pays homage to Quake. From its visuals, atmosphere, metallic riffs and general gothic feel, Dread Templar brings to mind id Software's legendary game. Levels are labyrinthine, secrets are well hidden (usually), ammunition is thankfully plentiful and character movement is swift. An important mechanic is bullet time and anyone who has played Max Payne understands exactly how it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The graphics of course could not be anything other than a detailed retrospective (sic). Welcome the fact that scattered throughout the levels are collectibles that upgrade our weapons, which of course have a secondary fire mode. If anything needs improvement it's the geometry of the levels, as there were times when the character would get caught in ledges in the environment so that we couldn't dodge monster attacks in time. From Tiny Thor, although I had it on my wishlist, the truth is that I didn't expect much from it. Appearances are deceiving though and we're dealing with a very fun game with a good handling feel. The visuals are reminiscent of Amiga games (for some unspecified reason it reminded me of Flink), with plenty of detail and vibrancy in the environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The camera is located at a relatively distant distance to get a better view of the space around us and especially to be able to take advantage of the main mechanic of the game, which is throwing the Mjolnir. This can be useful for hitting enemies from a safe distance, inaccessible switches, etc. while the way we aim and throw it and it glances off walls and ceilings is reminiscent of egg throwing in Yoshi's Island. Although this isn't a metroidvania, several inaccessible spots and the unlocking of the double jump at the end of the demo foreshadow the possibility of a second visit to levels we've finished. Something about the images, something about the trailer I'd seen before, convinced me to give it a chance. Tormented Souls wears its influences proudly, which are none other than the early Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark. The adventure begins in an abandoned hospital, where Caroline is investigating the disappearance of 2 little girls. The atmosphere of the game is fantastic and credit should be given to whoever wrote the music that accompanies it. The game is a completely old-school experience, with fixed camera and tank controls - it's worth noting that the more modern control mode is also available where the character moves according to the direction you click (however, the heroine maintains her movement over the change of viewing angle).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The puzzles made a very positive impression on me. Here you can see the more adventurous origins of AitD. The interaction points have separate screens where there are more than one point of interest that need some action from the player's side. Even item management includes searching for moving\/detachable parts, inscriptions, etc. Combat, though slightly clunky, works, with escape clearly being a better solution in some cases. However, the models of humans and some monster animations when taking damage that are a bit abrupt have room for improvement. The overall impression I got is positive and there's a good chance we'll see a gem. No release date has been set for the title, beyond vaguely into 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Steam Next Fest ends on the 22nd, but typically most demos may continue to be available after the festival is over.
