Based on RISC-V open hardware technology, the new processor is an important advance to achieve European technological sovereignty and reducing dependence on large multinational corporations

The BSC, Europe's leading developer of open source computing technologies, is committed to turning Barcelona into an innovation hub specialising in semiconductor design

Conclusion

My overall experience with Lichee Console is positive and I like it.

It should be noted that at the moment it is more of a product for tinkering and not something that you can immediately use as-is for work with no changes.

Substantial improvement will be required on software to fully utilize hardware capabilities (but this often happens with Linux on mobile platforms). Hardware has some flaws, they are unpleasant but not fatal (microsd stability at high speed, high idle power consumption). I am concerned about battery safety, and hopefully this is something that Sipeed can improve.

12nm TH1520 SoC offer competetive dynamic power consumption and sufficient performance, but lacks in IO (for desktop) which forced Sipeed to add additional interface ICs which happened to consume too much static power.

I hope that current rapid pace of RISC-V infrastructure development will continue and in the nearest years we'll see more RISC-V SoC's, this time with at least few lines of PCI-E - and we'll get even more exciting Linux-capable RISC-V devices.

Long term goals

The plan of this series of articles is to make a full blown OS, with filesystems, PCIe support, a good POSIX compatibility...

The OS will only target the virt machine of QEMU, in order to simplify the implementation.Performance won't be a major goal, as I will do everything alone, and as such I will try to keep things simple.

This project is meant to be a way to learn about low-level systems subjects, and in the longer term maybe higher level subjects. Most of the software developed in the project is going to be in Rust, but I will still try to run external programs in other languages (C/C++ utilities for example).

Πολυ καλο προτζεκτακι γραμμενο σε Rust, ειναι βημα βημα work-in-progress και εχει πολυ καλες πληροφοριες!

RISC-V, pronounced "risk five," competes with proprietary technology from British semiconductor and software design company Arm Holdings,
It can be used as a key part of anything from a smartphone chip to advanced processors for artificial intelligence.

The technology is being used by major Chinese tech firms such as Alibaba Group Holding and has become a new front in the strategic competition over advanced chip technology between the U.S. and China.
